GEO, AEO, and SEO are not three separate jobs. They are three surfaces of the same question: how do you become the answer? Here is what changes and what does not.

GEO, AEO, and SEO get treated as three different disciplines with three different playbooks. In practice, they overlap far more than the acronyms suggest.
The useful question is not "which one is real?" It is "which surface am I trying to win, and what does that surface reward?"
This guide separates the terms, shows where they blur, and gives one workflow that covers all three.
TL;DR
SEO optimizes for search engines and ranked links.
AEO optimizes to be the direct answer in snippets, panels, voice, and AI responses.
GEO optimizes to be cited or synthesized by generative engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.
The terms overlap. Some practitioners argue AEO and GEO are the same strategy with different names.
What changes is the unit of retrieval: a page for SEO, a passage for AEO, a cited claim for GEO.
What stays the same: answer real questions, structure clearly, cite sources, and build recognizable expertise.
The short answer
SEO gets you ranked. AEO gets you quoted as the answer. GEO gets you cited inside a generated response.
A page can do all three. A strong answer-first article with clear headings, a table, a source list, and a recognizable author is good SEO, good AEO, and good GEO at the same time.
The mistake is treating them as separate content strategies and writing three versions of the same page.

The Adobe comparison treats AEO and GEO as related but distinct. Profound argues they are the same strategy and prefers AEO as the clearer term.
Both views are defensible. The practical difference is the output you are measuring. If you want a blue link, you are doing SEO. If you want your sentence inside an AI answer, you are doing AEO or GEO. The label matters less than the measurement.
Why the terms blur
AEO grew out of featured snippets. When Google started answering questions directly at the top of the page, the goal shifted from "rank number one" to "be the answer."
GEO grew out of generative search. When ChatGPT and Perplexity started synthesizing answers from multiple sources, the goal shifted again: from "be the answer" to "be one of the sources the answer is built from."
The underlying work is similar. The retrieval layer is different.
Traditional search retrieves pages. AI search retrieves passages or chunks, synthesizes them, and cites some of them. That is why a page can rank well in Google and never get cited by ChatGPT. It is also why a page that ranks on page two can become an AI citation if it answers a specific question clearly.
The same article can serve all three surfaces. The difference is what you measure.
What actually changes
1. The unit of retrieval
SEO thinks in pages. AEO and GEO think in passages. Each section should make sense on its own, because that section may be the only part the model reads.
That does not mean writing fragmented content. It means giving every H2 a direct answer in the first two sentences before you elaborate.
2. Answer synthesis
An AI answer pulls from several sources. Your page does not need to cover everything. It needs to cover one facet better than anyone else, with enough context that the model can lift the claim without distortion.
3. Citation-worthiness
Models cite content that looks accurate, specific, and sourced. A claim with a date, a number, and a link is easier to cite than a vague assertion. That is why source lists and original data matter more in GEO than in traditional SEO.
4. Topical breadth
AI search often breaks a query into sub-questions. A site with ten pages covering ten related questions can be retrieved for several of them at once. A single pillar page may rank, but it is less likely to be cited across a multi-part answer.
5. Measurement
Rankings do not capture AI visibility. You need to check the answers directly. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews the questions your buyers ask. Note whether you appear, which competitors appear, and what source is cited.
One workflow for all three
You do not need three calendars. Use one process.
Step 1: Build a question list
Start with the questions buyers ask before they choose a tool like yours. Use Google's People Also Ask, Reddit threads, sales calls, and support tickets. The Reddit keyword research guide shows how to mine the language.
Step 2: Answer in the first two sentences
Every section gets a direct answer before the nuance. This is the single biggest change for AEO and GEO, and it does not hurt SEO.
Step 3: Structure for extraction
Use one H1, clear H2s, short paragraphs, tables, and numbered steps. A model should be able to lift a section without reading the whole page.
Step 4: Add evidence
Link to primary sources. Include dates. If you have original data, show it. A claim that can be verified is easier to cite.
Step 5: Build entity signals
Make sure your brand, founder, and product appear consistently across your site, LinkedIn, X, Reddit, and review sites. AI systems connect entities. A consistent founder profile with a real bio and a headshot helps.
Step 6: Measure citations, not just rankings
Once a month, ask the five questions that matter most to your business in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Record whether you appear, who else appears, and which URL is cited.

Do not expect the numbers to agree. A page can have a 2% CTR in Google and be cited in 40% of ChatGPT answers for a niche question. They are different surfaces with different incentives.
Common myths
"SEO is dead." No. Search engines still send buyers. The interface is changing, not disappearing.
"GEO is just SEO with a new name." The retrieval and citation mechanics are different enough to change how you structure content. The fundamentals overlap, but the measurement does not.
"AEO only matters for big brands." Small sites get cited when they answer a specific question clearly. In fact, specific niche pages often beat generic enterprise pages in AI answers.
"You need a special schema for AI." Structured data helps, but clean HTML, direct answers, and citations matter more. There is no magic AI-only markup.
"AI answers do not send traffic." Some answers do not. Others send qualified visitors who arrive already trusting you. Track referrals and branded search, not just clicks.
Where Xoru fits
Xoru monitors the discussions that shape AI answers. When someone asks for a tool like yours on Reddit, Quora, or LinkedIn, that thread can become a source ChatGPT and Perplexity cite. Answering it well is both a lead-generation play and a GEO play.
The GEO solution page explains the citation side. The ChatGPT recommendation guide covers the content and entity work. If you want to see which threads are already ranking for your category, the free report is the starting point.
FAQ
Is GEO the same as AEO?
They overlap. AEO focuses on being the direct answer; GEO focuses on being cited inside a generated answer. Some practitioners treat them as one strategy. The practical difference is what you measure.
Is GEO just SEO?
No. SEO optimizes pages for ranked results. GEO optimizes passages and claims for citation inside AI-generated answers. The fundamentals overlap, but the retrieval unit and measurement are different.
Do I need separate content for SEO, AEO, and GEO?
No. One answer-first article with clear headings, tables, sources, and a consistent author can serve all three. Writing separate versions usually creates cannibalization.
How do I measure GEO performance?
Ask the AI tools your buyers use the questions that matter to your business. Record whether your brand appears, which competitors appear, and which sources are cited. Do this monthly with the same prompt set.
Does schema markup help with AI search?
It can help machines understand the page, but it is not a shortcut. Clean structure, direct answers, and verifiable claims matter more than adding another schema type.
