Reddit Shadowban Check: Why Your Post Was Removed and How to Fix It
Your post looks fine to you but nobody can see it. Here is how to run a Reddit shadowban check, tell a shadowban apart from a removal, and get your account back to normal.

Zero upvotes. Zero comments. Six hours after posting a genuinely useful answer, nothing. I assumed the post was boring until I opened it in an incognito window and saw it was not there at all.
That is the strange part about Reddit moderation. You usually do not get told. Your post looks normal on your screen while everyone else sees nothing, or a grey "[removed]". Before you rewrite your copy or blame the subreddit, run a proper Reddit shadowban check. It takes two minutes and tells you which of four very different problems you actually have.
This guide covers how to check, why posts get removed, and how founders who market on Reddit can keep their accounts healthy.
What is a Reddit shadowban?
A Reddit shadowban is a sitewide restriction where your account and content become invisible to other users while everything still looks normal to you.
Reddit applies it to accounts its systems suspect of spam or ban evasion. You can still post, comment, and vote. None of it shows up for anyone else. There is no email and no banner. That silence is the design: it stops spam operations from noticing and simply creating a new account.
Most "my post got no traction" moments are not shadowbans, though. They are one of these:
What happened
Who did it
Scope
What you see
How to confirm
Sitewide shadowban
Reddit admins or automated systems
Whole account
Everything looks normal
Logged-out profile shows not found or suspended, appeal form accepts a request
Reddit spam filter removal

Single post or comment
"Removed by Reddit's filters" notice on your post
Post missing when logged out, profile still visible
AutoModerator removal

Often nothing, sometimes a bot reply
Post missing in that sub only

The fix is different for each row, so identifying the right one matters.
How do I check if I am shadowbanned on Reddit?
The quickest Reddit shadowban check is to open your profile in a logged-out or incognito window; if it shows a not found or suspended page, your account is likely shadowbanned.
Run these in order:
Logged-out profile check. Open a private window and go to reddit.com/user/YOUR_USERNAME. If the page loads with your posts, you are not shadowbanned sitewide. If it says the account does not exist or is suspended, you probably are.
Logged-out post check. Open the specific post or comment link in that same private window. If the profile loads but the post shows "[removed]" or is missing, the problem is that piece of content, not your account.
The appeals page. While logged in, visit reddit.com/appeals. If Reddit lets you file an appeal, your account has an active restriction. If it tells you there is nothing to appeal, your account is in good standing.
r/ShadowBan. Visit r/ShadowBan and follow the sticky link to have AutoModerator check your account status, or visit the official Reddit appeal page at reddit.com/appeal with whether your account looks shadowbanned. Useful as a second opinion.
Third-party "shadowban checker" websites mostly automate step one. They are fine, but you do not need them.
Why was my Reddit post removed?
Most Reddit posts are removed by automated filters reacting to account signals like low karma, a new account, repeated links, or posting too fast, rather than by a human mod who read your post.
Here are the causes I see most often from founders.
New account or low karma
Many subreddits run AutoModerator rules that silently filter posts from accounts under a karma or age threshold. The thresholds are often not published, which is frustrating, but it is deliberate. Spammers would game a public number.
The same link, everywhere
Posting your domain repeatedly, or dropping the same URL into many subreddits in a short window, is one of the clearest spam signals Reddit has. It can get individual posts filtered and, if it continues, your account restricted. In some cases a domain itself gets filtered across the site.
Contributor Quality Score
Reddit uses an internal Contributor Quality Score (CQS) to estimate how trustworthy an account is. Low-CQS accounts get filtered more aggressively. Some subreddits now require a minimum CQS to post. You can check your rough tier by posting in r/WhatIsMyCQS, where a bot replies with it.
Breaking a subreddit rule you did not read
Missing flair, a link on the wrong day, a promotional post outside the weekly thread. These removals are usually instant and often silent. My list of subreddits that allow self promotion notes which communities allow links and in what format.
False positives
Filters make mistakes. Even well-established accounts occasionally get a perfectly normal comment caught. If everything else checks out, it might just be bad luck.
Tracking which posts actually got engagement makes a silent removal obvious within hours, not days.
How do I fix a shadowban or removed post?
You fix a sitewide shadowban through Reddit's appeal form, and you fix individual removals by messaging the subreddit's moderators and improving the account signals that triggered the filter.
If you are shadowbanned sitewide
File an appeal at the appeals page. Be short and specific: what the account is used for, that you are a real person, and that you will follow the rules. Do not create a new account while you wait. Making a second account to get around a restriction is ban evasion, which turns a fixable problem into a permanent one.
If one post was filtered
Send a polite modmail to that subreddit. Something like: "Hi, my post titled X seems to have been caught by the filter. Could you take a look when you have a moment?" Mods approve plenty of these. Approval also gives the filter a signal that your content is fine.
If a mod removed it
Read the removal reason, fix the issue, and move on. Arguing in modmail rarely helps. Mods remember accounts that were gracious.
How do I build Reddit karma for marketing safely?
You build Reddit karma for marketing by answering questions in the communities your buyers use, without links, for a couple of weeks before you ever mention your product.
Karma farming in meme subs gives you a number but not the right history. Mods look at where your karma came from. A profile full of thoughtful answers in r/SaaS or your niche industry sub reads very differently from one built on reposted jokes.
A simple routine that works:
Comment on three to five threads a day in subs where your target users ask questions.
Keep promotional comments rare, roughly one in ten contributions, and only when the product actually answers the question asked.
Always disclose that you built the thing.
Space out any posts that contain your link, and never paste the same text in several subs.
Check your logged-out profile once a week. Catching a problem early is far easier than unwinding it.
Accounts get banned for behaving like bots. The safest marketing on Reddit is the kind that would look identical if you had written every word by hand.
That is why I am cautious about full automation. Tools that auto-post replies or mass-DM users tend to produce exactly the patterns filters are tuned to catch: identical text, high frequency, the same link everywhere. I wrote about this in the risks of auto-reply tools and why I prefer AI-drafted, human-approved replies.
Every draft waits for a human click, which keeps posting frequency and tone natural.
Can a shadowban be temporary?
Some Reddit restrictions lift on their own after a period of normal behavior, while sitewide shadowbans generally need an appeal to be reviewed.
Subreddit-level filtering tied to karma or CQS loosens as your account ages and earns better signals. Temporary suspensions come with an end date in the notice. A true sitewide shadowban usually stays until someone reviews it, so file the appeal rather than waiting it out.
Keeping your Reddit account healthy long term
Healthy Reddit accounts post at a human pace, contribute far more than they promote, and get checked regularly so problems surface early.
This is the reason Xoru never posts on its own. It finds buying-intent threads on Reddit, X, Hacker News, and LinkedIn, labels how strict each subreddit is about promotion, and drafts a reply in your voice. You read it, edit it, and post it yourself. The pace stays human and your account stays ban-safe. If you want to see how that looks, the Reddit lead generation page walks through it, and pricing includes a free trial.
Run the incognito check today. It costs nothing, and it might explain a lot of quiet posts.
Karma is not a vanity score. It is a gate. Some subreddits will not let you post without it. Here is how much you actually need and how to earn it without farming.
